Born in a small town close to Vienna, Austria, 1991. After graduating from high school she
completed a training as a hair and makeup artist in Vienna. While working as a freelance makeup artist for several years, she finished her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna in 2016. She is currently a D.F.A candidate at Kyoto University of the Arts, using wet plate collodion photography as an extension of her exploration of the human unconscious mind. My work is the result of the effort to gain a deeper understanding of other human beings and to unveil unconscious aspects of the human mind.
Many of my projects are collaborative, as I try almost like an actor to expand my own awareness by absorbing other people’s experiences. Therefore, the mask has been a recurring motif in my work. While some of my work is strongly influenced by my experiences as a makeup artist, I have expressed masks through various kinds of media like projection mapping and video installations.
To me, masks are not only a mere tool for masquerade but a means to expose something through the concealment of something else. This contradictory essence of masks has led me to use them as a metaphor for the natural interconnectivity between people and the elusiveness of the self. Working with the wet plate collodion process has created an opportunity to reflect on these issues in a completely new way, and to further explore the possibilities of expressing masks through photography.
